Hi,
I have my paternal line, the Sproats, leading from my father through Orange Riley -born in 1855-as given to me by my great-grandfather, Richard H. Sproat, Sr-born in the Oklahoma Territory, USA. Through shared research I have it-from them, (tentatively) continuing as follows:
My grt-grandfather: Richard H. Sproat, Sr. b. 1904 (OK Terr, USA) Richard's father: Orange Riley Sproat b. 1855 (Illinois, USA) Orange's father: Cochran Sproat b. ? d. Bef 1880 Cochran's father: David Sproat b. 1787 (Pennsylvania, USA) David's father: Alexander Sproat b.1741 (Miln Plunton, Kirkcudbright) Alexander's father: John S. Sproat b. 1710 (also Miln Plunton) John S.'s father: John Sproat b. 1690 (Borgue, Kirkcudbright) John's father: Thomas Sproat b. 1640 (Brighouse, Borgue, ...) Thomas's father: John Sproat b. 1610 (Brighouse, Borgue) John's father: Thomas Sproat b. 1585 (Abbeywood, Kent, England) Thomas's father: William Sproat b. about 1550 (Kirkcudbright)...
I would love to find more information confirming any of these generations. As there are numerous resources, I am concerned with verifying the information as well as adding to it. According to my great-grandfather, Alexander served in the Revolutionary War, and he or another ancestor crossed the Potomac with George Washington,... Grandfather also mentioned that he had researched our tree back to the Sproat Castle-but much of his research has changed hands and disappeared. I had shared several emails with someone who mentioned a Sandy Sproat residing in or near Kirkcudbright who was something of an expert on the Sproats or at least on Kirkcudbright history... but I have since lost touch with this person.
Anyway, I'd be happy to receive any help... and certainly be willing to assist others as I might -from this end of the ocean!

I am also descended from the same family, except that I am from Alexander Sproat's son William. I would be very interested in sharing any information that I have regarding this family.quote: Originally posted by TMCS10
